Is Your Career Sustainable?
Posted on February 26, 2016

Work is important to us.  At the most basic level it earns us money which allows us to put food on the table and pay the rent or the mortgage… but is it more than that?  Why do people keep working even when they are financially secure?

Work helps us meet our social needs, it helps us feel important and for some of us, it helps us feel like we are making a difference to the world that we live in.

The key challenges to sustaining a satisfying career include:

  • A shortage of suitable roles
  • The impact of having a family
  • You are not enjoying your work any more
  • You are being bypassed for suitable roles
  • The mortgage still has to be paid

A satisfying career has strong earning capacity as well as job satisfaction or the enjoyment of your job.  Look at the diagram below to work out what colour your career is.  Think of the colours representing a karate belt colour and the goal being to work up the belts to continuously improve your income and job satisfaction.

There are three keys to a successful career:

  • Personal—your career choices match your personal talents and values
  • Credible—you must not only ‘know your stuff’; you must be able to ‘show your stuff’
  • Valuable—you must be valuable to others
